Once you have found a good possibility, how do you know if your information product will sell on eBay? The nice thing about eBay is that information on what is already selling is readily available.  You simply check the completed items listings to see if anything is selling in your topic area. 

You’ll have to login to your eBay account to use this feature.  From any page on eBay, you can find the “Advanced Search” link in the upper right hand corner. Enter your topic, and be sure to check the “Completed listings only” box and sort buy “Price: highest first”.

The results will show all related listings that have ended within the last 15 days.  Prices in green are items that have sold.  The ones in red are auctions that ended without a sale. You’ll usually find a lot new and used physical books for sale.

A good way to sort for eBooks and downloadable products is to look for items with free shipping.  A lot of sellers offer a physical product at a low price, and then use shipping fees to cover their costs and/or generate the profit. Downloadable products always have free shipping.

eBay also offers a subscription service called Marketplace Research, which gives buyers and sellers access to listing, bidding, and pricing trends in the marketplace. You can find the details at www.ebay.com/marketplaceresearch. 

Among the statistics available are starting prices, average sold price (ASP), average number of bids per item, number of completed items, and number of items sold. This is real-time data going back up to 90 days depending on which level of service you sign up for.  The data can be searched for by categories or keywords.
