Protection From Competitors
One major advantage of information products is that they can be delivered by instant download. This completely eliminates all the hassles of packaging and shipping. If you plan to use this delivery method, however, you need to be aware of eBay’s VeRO program.
VeRO stands for “Verified Rights Owner”, and it’s a policy that eBay has put in place to protect against the sale of counterfeit or products that violate trademarks or copyrights. The primary purpose of this policy is to protect eBay from any legal responsibility of rights infringement.
Basically, rights owners can register with eBay and then request that auctions be removed if they feel that ownership rights are being violated. eBay encourages rights owners to create their own “About Me” pages to outline their policies regarding these matters. This program was put into place mainly to stop the sale of fake brand-name goods and pirated media or software. Big companies will also report sellers who use ad copy, logos, or copyrighted professional pictures in their listings. One thing to know about this program is that you can be accused of selling violating items without any proof required. eBay doesn’t investigate these matters and will remove your listing without checking into any possible violations.
An unfortunate consequence of the VeRO policy is that a dishonest competitor can report you as being in violation. eBay will immediately remove your listings, and you may not even get a notice that this has been done. There are many stories of this happening to legitimate sellers. Do a Google search on “ebay vero scam” (without the quotes) and you will find many stories of sellers getting burned by this policy.
Since eBay provides us with millions of online shoppers, we have to play by their rules. How does this relate to you? In order to protect yourself, it’s a good idea to register for the VeRO program if you are the author, creator, and/or copyright owner of your product.
