Maximize eBay Traffic
This is one of the most important aspects of success on eBay– Getting your auction listing found.
Of all the components of an eBay listing, none is more important than your title. Think of your title as your “ad for your ad”. The title invites buyers to click and read more about your offer. Many eBay researchers have verified that 90% of all searches are done on title only. Only 10% of buyers select the “Search title and description” box. For search, your title is what gets you found.
It’s extremely important that you use the keywords that buyers would use to find you in your title. A great place to find what terms buyers are searching for is “eBay Pulse” (http://pulse.ebay.com). The eBay Pulse page will give you the top ten search terms broken down by category.
Say you’re creating an info product related to knitting. We went to eBay Pulse and selected Crafts–>Knitting from the category pull down menu. At the time of this writing these were the top 10 search terms:
- yarn
- knitting
- knitting needles
- wool yarn
- rowan
- needles
- kit
- lace
- cotton yarn
- sock yarn
Because space is so limited in your title, you will only be able to use a couple of these terms at best when creating a compelling title. You will however, use every related term that you find in your auction description, as some buyers search this way as well.
You need to keep in mind that you should only use keywords that relate to your item. For example, currently the top search on eBay is “xbox 360″. You obviously can’t use this term for your Knitting product. This is called “keyword spamming” and will get your listing removed or worse. You can read about eBay’s policies regarding this here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/keyword-spam.html
You only have 55 characters to work with in creating your title, so don’t waste any space with useless adjectives or symbols. Good adjectives can draw attention if they emphasize a benefit. Just don’t overuse them. We’re sure you’ve also seen symbols like $,@,!,& in listings. Some sellers think that this will attract attention to a listing. They’re actually just a waste of space.
Having your listing found is only half the battle. Your title also needs to be compelling and entice your visitor to view your auction. In The Auction Profit Machine course, we provide an in depth discussion for how to achieve this with several examples. This information is critical to the success of any auction.
